The book with the fist on it represents knowledge is power.
The 14th stripe on the flag represents Africa and our ancestors.
The red, white, and blue on Africa represents how western society covered up African history.
The red, black, and green colors on the United States represents the impact we have had and are having on this country.
The People's Flag was born from the heart of Charles Frye, a formerly incarcerated black man, who wanted a symbol that represented his place in American society as an American of African descent.
It was while watching news broadcasts of several protests, that he noticed that there were no symbols that represented him as a black man in today's society. this also caused him to reflect on the time that he spent in the California department of corrections, where he struggled with finding value in himself. As a result of being incarcerated and having a lot of time for self introspection, he developed self respect and self value. This allowed him to see the impact that he could have on his surrounding community.
He soon began to encounter others who noticed the same problem of lack of black male representation in their communities. One common theme began to emerge: Black people do not value themselves, which would make it very difficult to value each other. Mr. Frye realized that once he was able to value himself, he would then be able to value others that look like him.
A major part of Mr. Frye beginning to value himself was understanding that the Black history he had been taught by western society was a complete fabrication of the truth. Once he began to understand the greatness of his ancestors he was able to unlock the potential inside of himself.
The flag that Mr. Frye designed has many meanings. It not only pays homage to Black ancestors, but it also reflects the continuous journey that Black people are on in this country. Mr. Frye believes that the more we are aware of the contributions of Black people and the impact that they have had on our country and the world, the more positive our self image will become as Black people. He believes that through education about our ancestors and our true history, we will begin to see the change that we want in our communities.
